The Charlotte Hounds on Saturday afternoon held on to beat the New York Lizards 13-11 in front of 3,012 fans at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. With the win, the Hounds remain in fifth place in the MLL Standings, just below the Boston Cannons. The top four teams qualify for the postseason. Hounds midfielder Peet Poillon was named Player of the Game for a four-point performance.
Poillon opened the scoring for the Hounds after Mike Sawyer recovered a groundball to set up the goal. Sawyer followed up with a tally of his own from just inside the 2-point line to give the Hounds a 2-0 lead four minutes in to the game. But the Lizards won the ensuing faceoff and some quick passing resulted in a goal by Steve Mock to cut the lead to one. Rob Pannell scored the equalizer after working from behind the cage to rip a one-handed shot low. The Hounds responded with a three-goal run to close the quarter, with Matt White, Josh Hawkins and Mason Poli all scoring in transition to build a 5-2 lead.
The Hounds kept momentum rolling in to the second quarter, as Brett Schmidt forced a turnover and Steve Dircks recovered the groundball to set up Kevin Drew who beat Drew Adams low for a 6-2 advantage. Ryan Young extended the lead to 7-2 before Dave Earl was able to sneak a shot past Adam Ghitelman to cut the Hounds’ advantage down to four. But the home team again closed out the quarter with a three-goal run, including a 2-pointer from Poillon, to move in front 11-3 at the half.
Poli won the groundball off the first faceoff of the third quarter, and was able to dish the ball to Eric Lusby who buried his shot and pushed the Hounds ahead 12-3. But the Lizards closed the quarter with back-to-back goals, the second of the night for both Mock and Earl, to make it a seven-goal game, 12-5.
The Lizards stayed hot at the start of the fourth, as Steven Waldeck ripped a 2-pointer to pull back within five, 12-7, just 2:15 in to the quarter. Jake Tripucka made it a six-goal game again though as he bounced one past Adams three minutes later. But the Lizards began to mount what looked like a comeback beginning with back-to-back goals from Pannell to cut the lead to 13-9. Max Seibald followed that up with a 2-point goal to pull the Lizards within two, 13-11, with just over four minutes to play. But the Hounds held on and were able to close out the game to improve to 5-6 on the season. Ghitelman had 12 saves in the win.
The Hounds go back on the road next week, traveling to Columbus to face the Ohio Machine (1-9) at 7:00pm on Saturday the 27th. The game will be available in the Charlotte area on WMYT-12 or can be streamed nationally through ESPN3.com.
