Hounds End Skid, Beat Machine 17-16 In Ohio

The Charlotte Hounds snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday night, using a seven-goal fourth quarter to defeat the Ohio Machine 17-16 in front of a crowd of 2,269 at Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio. It marks the first road-win in franchise history. Hounds midfielder Kevin Kaminski was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his five (5) point performance of four goals, including a 2-pointer.

Within the first two minutes of the game, the Hounds jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Stephen Berger scored top shelf on Machine goalie Brian Phipps and Jovan Miller followed it up with a 2-point goal. The Machine brought the game back within one though, as Kyle Hartzell ripped a 2-pointer of his own to end the first quarter at 3-2 Hounds.

The teams traded goals to start the second, which included the first tally from Kaminski, before the Machine’s Dan Groot got a low shot by Adam Ghitelman to tie the game up 5-5. The Hounds responded with a three-goal run that was anchored by a score and an assist from Jeremy Boltus, as well as Kaminski’s second of the game, to carry an 8-5 advantage into halftime.

Matt Danowski extended the Hounds run, and lead, to four goals just 48 seconds into the third. However, the Machine took over control, using a 2-point goal from defenseman Ray Megill to spur a four-goal run of its own. The run concluded with a second tally by Hartzell, a goal that gave the Machine its first lead of the game, 10-9, at 8:55 into the third. The Hounds were able to tie the game back up before the end of the quarter though, as Justin Turri made a quick fake and then buried a shot by Phipps.

The Machine scored first in the fourth quarter, but the Hounds responded with back-to-backs from Kaminski (his third of the game) and Boltus to regain a 12-11 lead. Steele Stanwick tied the game for a fifth time before the Hounds rattled off another three-goal run. In that run, Danowski and Boltus completed their respective hat tricks and Kaminski scored the first 2-point goal of his career to put the Hounds ahead 16-12 with 7:10 left in the game.

The teams traded goals again before Hartzell scored his second 2-pointer of the game, bringing the lead down to 17-15 with three minutes to play. Shortly after, Danowski was called for a personal foul on Phipps, which allowed the Machine to go man-up for the remainder of the game. They got a power-play goal out of Jim Connolly, pulling the game within their reach at 17-16 with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Though the Machine won the ensuing faceoff, the Hounds defense stepped up to run out the clock before what would have been the game-tying shot could be taken. Ghitelman had 15 saves in the winning effort.

With the 17-16 victory, the Hounds (2-6) sweep the season series versus the Machine (1-6). They will return home to American Legion Memorial Stadium to face the Bayhawks (7-1) on July 7. However, players  Berger, Miller, Ghitelman, Billy Bitter and Ryan Flanagan will all be in action next week at the 2012 MLL All-Star Game, Presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill. The game will be played on June 30 at FAU Stadium in Palm Beach County, Fla. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2-HD.
